NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News firefighters are investigating the cause of three small fires in three separate laundry rooms at an apartment complex.
Lisa King with the Newport News Fire Department said crews responded to a fire in a laundry room at the Terrytown Apartment Complex in the 11100 block of Jefferson Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters found light smoke in the laundry room and were able to quickly extinguish a small fire. An investigation revealed a sign on the rear wall of the room had been on fire.
While there, residents told firefighters the same thing had happened in another laundry room at the complex. After investigating, the Fire Department found two additional laundry rooms where fires had burned themselves out, according to King.
King said an investigator from the Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fires.
No one was injured.
A van crashed into a house in Virginia Beach Wednesday, and fire officials said an elderly driver was behind the wheel.
A 12-year-old student was arrested and charged with making a threat against a Hampton middle school.
The suspect entered Oriental Decor in the Lynnhaven Crossing Shopping Center around 1:50 p.m. on Dec. 6 and stole a sword valued at $300.
