NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 22-year-old man died at a hospital after a police sergeant heard shots fired in Newport News Tuesday morning.
Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said just before 2 a.m., the sergeant heard the shots in the area of Dresden Drive and Adams Drive. When officers arrived on scene, they found several bullet casings.
Dispatchers never received calls for gunshots, McPherson said.
About 20 minutes later, staff at a local hospital reported a male gunshot victim had suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Paris Bennett of Newport News, was pronounced dead at the hospital around 11:30 a.m., making the shooting the city's tenth homicide in 2013.
Police are still investigating the shooting. There is no suspect information at this time.
