NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A building on the campus of Christopher Newport University was evacuated following the discovery of a possible meth lab.
CNU spokeswoman Lori Jacobs said Wilson Hall, a dormitory, was evacuated at 6:48 p.m.. She called the suspected lab a "mobile meth lab".
Wilson Hall is one of three buildings in the CNU Village .
"...we got out as fast as we can, and the cop was ushering us out saying, 'This is not a drill. This is not a drill'," former student Robert Frazier said.
Frazier was at the dorm visiting friends.
"We came back here, and they told us just to back up farther, so we just hung out here in the parking lot," Frazier added.
Police and fire crews arrived and started searching a car in the parking lot next to Wilson. University officials evacuated the dorm out of concern over the chemicals inside the suspected mobile meth lab.
Students were allowed back inside just before 9 p.m.
The school's police department is leading the investigation, with the help of the Newport News Police Department. Newport News Fire also responded to the scene.
