NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - One person was killed and another injured in a double shooting at a Newport News hotel early Saturday morning.
Just after 2 a.m., two Newport News police officers were working extra duty at a Hampton University Homecoming party at the Magnuson Hotel in the 1000 block of Omni Boulevard. The officers reported hearing gunshots in the parking lot.
According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, the officers searched the parking lot and found two men who had been shot.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 23-year-old Victor Rasheem Russell.
The second shooting victim, a 23-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
Medics transported a third person, who was identified as the suspect, to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Matthew Allen. He was charged with one count of murder and malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
According to police, there was a verbal altercation inside the party prior to the shooting.
The party was not a sponsored event by Hampton University, according to investigators.
