NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Newport News Police Department has some new additions, but they aren't officers.
The NNPD has added 60 tiny cameras to the force. Officers can attach them to headbands, collars, and specially-made Oakley sunglasses. Once you turn them on, they record and save everything.
"Not only does the use of force go down, but citizen complaint reduces significantly. The officer knows he is being video taped, so he is going to be on his 'A game' and may use all options before using the taser. The citizen, as soon as they realize they are being recorded, their behavior adjusts and it protects both of them."
The cameras have also been installed on tasers, and will be used to replace dash cam videos in patrol cars.
