NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News man was sentenced Friday for a gang-related murder at a Kmart parking lot in 2008.
U.S. District Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen sentenced 25-year-old Aronte D. Jarvis to life in prison for the shooting murder of Jonte Terry, according to Margaret Jahn with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Jarvis pled guilty to murder in aid of racketeering activity in June. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Tayvonna Licorish, was charged with accessory after the fact and misprision of a felony and will stand trial November 13.
Jarvis and Licorish, were indicted Oct. 10. According to the indictment, Jarvis was a member of a criminal organization called "Thug Relations" operating in various Newport News locations. The indictment alleged Jarvis and other members of the gang established the power and prestige of the group though violence, including the murder of Terry on Feb. 3, 2008.
Eighteen-year-old Terry was shot and killed in a Kmart parking lot on Oriana Drive by Jarvis so he could maintain his position in "Thug Relations."
