NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Mothers and children filled the streets of Newport News Saturday to fight violence. After the walk, participants held a block party.
Mothers Against Violence organized the event, with the goal of giving children in the community hope, peace and a better chance at life. The family fun included games, food, and good music, and it all came with an important message.
“Our goal is to bring hope and peace and love back into the communities and into the hearts of God's people, because our young people seem to have no hope, and not to have any sense of direction to where they are going. So we try to bring hope back into the lives of young people in the community," said Patricia L. Harris, Mothers Against Violence founder.
Harris started Mothers Against Violence in 2003 after her son and daughter were killed in Newport News and Hampton.
