NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A mother-daughter argument turned physical, leaving a Newport News woman charged with a felony offense Tuesday.
Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said an officer was flagged down in the area of Dresden Drive and Jefferson Avenue around 3 p.m. He was told a 14-year-old girl and her mother had been in a verbal altercation before that became a physical fight.
When officers responded to the pair's home on Adams Drive, they learned the two had been fighting about the daughter's attendance at school. The teen told officers her mother hit and choked her and grabbed her hair, "[throwing] her around the house."
McPherson also said the daughter told police she had kicked her mother and fought back. She was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and then released.
Her mother, 32-year-old Marcella Marie Meekins, was arrested and charged with one count of felony child abuse.
