NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News garbage truck driver was on his route Thursday afternoon when the vehicle suddenly became engulfed in flames.
The driver was in the process of emptying garbage cans in the 300 block of Ilene Drive in Denbigh when a fire sparked in the engine compartment of the truck .
Battalion Chief Steve Pincus says the driver suffered minor burns during his escape and was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital for treatment.
The truck was destroyed.
The preliminary investigation suggests a mechanical malfunction in the engine compartment caused the fire.
When fire crews responded they put down absorbent pads on the road to prevent oils from the truck from going down the storm drains.
Crews from the city's Solid Waste Division also responded to conduct clean-up operations.
