NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Fire crews responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Parkway Drive.
Fire department Battalion Chief James Barrick said the first unit that arrived at 2:42 p.m. reported heavy smoke coming from the house.
Barrick said the occupant of the house was alerted by a smoke detector and excited the home.
Investigators said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen, and is accidental. There is heavy smoke and heat damage to the lower floor, and smoke damage to the second floor.
Barrick said no injuries were reported.
