NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Christopher Newport University students say they were surprised to learn of a possible mobile meth lab found on their campus.
CNU police are still investigating the suspected lab.
Wilson Hall, a residential dorm, was temporarily evacuated following the discovery March 30. University officials evacuated the dorm out of concern over chemicals that could be present.
Police and fire crews received information that a car in the parking lot next to Wilson may have been connected to the incident. According to Newport News Police Spokesman Lou Thurston, a drug detecting dog with his department alerted officers to the presence of drugs in the vehicle, prompting a search. Both marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle.
The school's police department is leading the investigation, with the help of the Newport News Police Department. Newport News Fire also responded to the scene.
CNU Police Chief Jeffrey S. Brown said Monday in a prepared statement, "...the investigation regarding the suspected mobile meth lab remains active...all probative evidence will be sent to a forensics lab for analysis...the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits the disclosure of information related to student disciplinary matters."
Days later, students of the university are still in disbelief.
Brian told WAVY.com, "It's a ridiculous thing. It's unbelievable, but also not outside the scope of a kind of tragic reality."
Michael, also a CNU student, added the event was unfortunate as it's bringing "negative publicity towards our campus and our school."
Evidence collected during the investigation will be sent to a forensics lab. No arrests have been made at this time.
