HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - After a pothole disaster on Interstate 264 and an inner re-working of its staff, VDOT has announced a district administrator for Hampton Roads.
According to a news release, James Utterbeck has been named the district administrator for Hampton Roads. Utterbeck has 28 years of experience in VDOT, the private sector and the military. He joined VDOT in 1999 as an engineer.
He led the Charlottesville Residency from 2005-2006, then worked in the organization's Scheduling and Contracts Division.
Most recently, he worked as district administrator with the Culpeper District.
A company has been hired to complete the repairs to the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on the Outer Banks, but how long those repairs will take remains unknown.
Drivers traveling between Hatteras Island and the mainland were forced to use an emergency ferry Wednesday, following the sudden closure of the Bonner Bridge Tuesday.
State officials say construction on a new Bonner Bridge has been delayed for years because of a legal battle with an environmental group.
