NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - One person died and four others were injured after a motorhome overturned Friday morning on I-64 West at the New Kent County line.
Police say 49-year-old Gary L. Charcalia was killed when the front left tire of the 2000 Freightliner tractor he was driving blew. Charcalia was pulling a 2003 ALFA Camper Trailer at the time of the single vehicle accident.
The vehicle was traveling in the west lane when it ran off the left side of the roadway, according to Virginia State Police.
It struck several trees and then overturned onto its right side.
Charcalia's wife, 43-year-old Brenda, sons, 14-year-old Brock and 18-year-old Dalton, and family friend 18-year-old Kyle Giewont were injured in the crash. They transported to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
Brenda suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries the three teenagers had only minor injuries.
I-64 West was closed around exit 209, and motorists were diverted at exit 211. That portion of road reopened at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The family and family friend were traveling from Virginia Beach back home to Erie, Pa.
The crash is still under investigation.
The Portsmouth City Council has set a public hearing for Tuesday, Dec. 17, to talk about a plan to bring a casino to the city.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said work to secure the Bonner Bridge could take anywhere from a week to 90 days.
