VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A man wanted for allegedly attempting to hit a police officerwhile driving a stolen car last week was arrested Thursday byVirginia Beach police.
Matthew Campbell, 20, was taken in by police without incidentThursday at about 10:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Laskin Road.
Police believe Campbell was involved in an incident on the nightof May 12, where a man leaving a sub shop on First Colonial Roadwas approached by a suspect whose face was covered with a bandana.The suspect stole the man's car.
Then, on May 15, police approached a suspicious vehicle parkedoutside the Emerald Point Apartments on Prince Albert Court. Thesuspect started driving toward an officer, attempting to strikehim.
According to police spokesperson Adam Bernstein, the officer hadto jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. The suspect's vehiclehit another vehicle head-on, injuring the driver.
The suspect kept driving. Police located the unoccupied vehiclea few blocks away and determined it was the car stolen outside thesub shop.
Campbell is being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Centerwithout bond.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said work to secure the Bonner Bridge could take anywhere from a week to 90 days.
