NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man died in an Ocean View shooting Saturday afternoon, and some neighbors say a woman told them she shot a man who had broken into her house.
Norfolk Police Department spokesman Chris Amos said the shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Kingston Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Some neighbors told WAVY.com they heard a "pop" coming from the home, but thought nothing of it until police arrived. They said a couple rents the home, but the man is currently out of town.
One neighbor, who was mowing his lawn at the time, told WAVY.com the woman who rents the home came running over asking to use the phone.
The neighbor listened as she called police and claims the woman told police she shot a man in her bedroom. She believed the man had broken into her home, according to the neighbor.
"She just told the police that the man had broken into her house and she shot him," said Stephen Shifflett, who said he spoke to the woman. "[It happened] in the bedroom. She said she emptied her magazine."
Shifflett said the woman told him she used a .45 caliber gun and then threw it underneath her car in the driveway.
He told WAVY.com the woman left the scene with police.
Amos said the identity of the deceased male is pending notification of next of kin.
Further information surrounding the shooting has not been released by police. Amos told WAVY.com at 3 p.m. Sunday officers were still gathering information on the circumstances of the shooting.
