NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The man who was attacked and killed in his home in Norfolk Wednesday has been identified.
Louis A. Daniel Jr., 77, was found dead in his apartment in the 100 block of Cromwell Parkway, police said.
Neighbors we spoke with said they heard shots in the night. Around 7 a.m., a call came into police dispatch that an elderly man was unresponsive. Neighbors say the man would sit in his window, enjoy the sun, and read.
"He read a book in the window. He was always reading all the time. He was nice as can be, and he never bothered nobody," said Marvin Evans, a neighbor.
Police were seen at the window dusting for prints.
Police aren't saying much about the case, but Evans said he heard a gunshot last night between 11-11:30 p.m.
"I heard a gun shot last night. I was watching TV, and it didn't dawn on me that someone was shooting or anything like that," Evans added.
Cromwell House Apartments has a cross section of residents, but most are seniors, and many have complained about security in the complex.
"We've been complaining a lot, and nothing ever gets done... people breaking in, and we've had cars vandalized in here," said Philip Quinn, who lives above the victim.
Evans says, "I think it's a shame, and they need some security here, and everybody has been asking for some more security."
Neil Rosen, Vice President of Property Management for the property owners Ripley-Heatwole said, "We have tried to do a neighborhood watch, but the residents refuse to participate. We have a security company that drives through the parking lots at night, and we also patrol the residential halls."
