ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) - The Isle of Wight County School Board voted 4-1 for the resignation of fellow member Herb DeGroft, but the board doesn't have the power to make him resign.
"If our staff or students had done what you have done, then there would be a punishment of some type," said board member Kent Hildebrand.
Punishment in this case for DeGroft would be his resignation, but he said he's not going anywhere.
"I'm not resigning, as of now," DeGroft said.
DeGroft admits he made a mistake when he emailed what some called racist and inappropriate emails to other board members. One had a picture with bare-breasted, African female warriors with the caption, "Michelle Obama's High School Reunion." Another email said Michelle Obama was paid $50 to model in National Geographic.
The NAACP has also asked DeGroft to resign.
"I'm a good example for the students to say 'there's somebody who made a mistake, but at least he's done the honorable thing to apologize and ask for forgiveness'," DeGroft added. "It was a simple mistake. It was not a racist email in my mind."
"A pastor at any church is held to a higher standard," Hildebrand said. "Police officers are held to a higher standard. Every elected official from the president down is held to a higher standard."
The voters alone have the power to petition for DeGroft to be recalled.
