JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY.com) - A James City County police officer was hit by a vehicle after responding to a fight at Colonial Manor senior living center Monday around 4 p.m. and a suspect was shot and killed.
JCC officers responded to an assault by a resident of the retirement facility and a fight between the resident and his roommate, according to Major Rubino with the JCC Sheriff's Office.
When an officer arrived, the 26-year-old resident was outside, in his car. The officer got out of his patrol vehicle and the man struck and pinned him with his car against the patrol vehicle. The officer was able to fire shots into the resident's car, but the man drove to the back of the parking lot, got out, and approached the collapsed officer, threatening to kill him. There was a struggle between the two before the officer shot and killed the suspect, according to Rubino.
President of the center Dr. Pedro Becerra told WAVY.com that the suspect and his roommate were part of a program that the facility is partnering with the Community Service Board to offer. People who are homeless or need a place to stay are allowed to come and go from the center whenever they want.
The suspect is disabled and was asked to leave after the altercation with his roommate, according to Becerra.
Rubino confirms that the 44-year-old officer was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of a broken pelvis and fractured elbow, but was still conscious and able to speak. The suspect's roommate was taken to a local hospital as well, but has been released, Rubino said.
The suspect's name has not been released, but investigations are ongoing.
