HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Jeffrey Pereira with Hampton Fire-Rescue said crews responded to the first block of Whetstone Drive in Farmington for a residential fire Monday evening.
The call for the fire came in to emergency dispatchers at 5:52 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the two-story house to find heavy smoke showing on two sides of the home and heavy fire coming out of a kitchen window. Crews were able to control the fire quickly and prevent it from going to the second floor.
There was one occupant inside the home at the time of the fire, but was able to get out unharmed before fire crews arrived. The fire severely damaged the kitchen area of the house, which was condemned. Two elderly residents were displaced because of the damage.
Pereira said occupants of the house said they were cooking when they noticed heavy smoke. However, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Pereira said one person was being observed for a smoke inhalation injury, but was not transported to a hospital.
