PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Retired Col. Robert Morris spoke with WAVY.com about the explosive power of IEDs in light of Monday's explosion at the Boston Marathon.
"It's kind of like folks liks this are acting surpised this could have happened and Sept. 11," Morris said. "The planes on Sept 11 are largest IEDs ever built, but one thing you'll notice until recently, we didn't mention IEDs in the US. We're now getting some realization that not only is it happening here but it could get much worse."
A company has been hired to complete the repairs to the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on the Outer Banks, but how long those repairs will take remains unknown.
Drivers traveling between Hatteras Island and the mainland were forced to use an emergency ferry Wednesday, following the sudden closure of the Bonner Bridge Tuesday.
State officials say construction on a new Bonner Bridge has been delayed for years because of a legal battle with an environmental group.
