WITHAMS, Va. (WAVY) - State police say there was a fifth fire on the Eastern Shore this weekend.
The latest fire started on Pungoteague Road in Painter around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. No word on what was burning or if it is connected to a string of arsons.
Firefighters also responded to an abandoned home burning on Jenkins Bridge Road and Horsey Road in Withams, just before 3 a.m. Sunday. The structure was a total loss.
Police suspect the fire was arson, though the fire scene exam has not concluded yet.
There were two other fires reported on Bayside Road in Onancock Saturday. One was at an abandoned building, and police confirmed it was arson. The other was a brush fire that police are also investigating as arson. Police say the two cases are probably connected.
An abandoned trailer on New Branch Road in Onancock also caught fire. That scene is under investigation.
Police have confirmed more than 50 arsons on the Eastern Shore since November.
Police urge the public to come forward with any information that can assist in solving the arsons on the Eastern Shore. There continues to be a $25,000 reward offered to any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
