PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Two weekends of Downtown Tunnel closures down -- just more than 20 left to go. WAVY.com keeps you updated on the progress inside the tunnels and the ways drivers are adjusting to alternate routes.
Work on the Downtown Tunnel's westbound tube has wrapped up early its first two weekends. Tuesday, Elizabeth River Tunnels sent pictures and info to WAVY.com about what exactly is going on while the tube is closed.
Crews are fireproofing the tunnel, installing a new ventilation system and new lighting, and relocating fire alarms, extinguishers, and water hydrants.
10 On Your Side is also keeping up with the alternate routes you can use during weekend closures. Your options: The High Rise, the Midtown Tunnel, and the new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge.
So far, the Jordan Bridge has proved to be the shortest and most popular alternate. During the first weekend closure, the bridge waived tolls and experienced record traffic -- more than 25,000 drivers crossed it. Even during the second weekend closure -- when tolls were not lifted -- almost 18,000 drivers crossed the bridge.
With an E-Z Pass, the cost to cross the Jordan Bridge is $1.50.
