CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A court date has been set for the driver of the truck police say hit and killed a school crossing guard on October 3.
Police said crossing guard Lovette T. Person, 35, was hit by a Toyota Tundra driven by Tiare L. Blees, 32, outside Western Branch Intermediate School in Chesapeake.
Person was at the intersection of Brittany Way and Terry Drive directing traffic. She was wearing a reflecting vest.
Police said Blees may have been distracted by the sun. She was later charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor offense. Blees was due in court Monday, November 14 on that charge, but did not show up for the arraignment so the judge ordered a warrant for her arrest.
The clerk for the court later told WAVY.com Blees showed up in court Monday afternoon and had her next court appearance set for December 10. The new court date will give Blees time to get an attorney.
Wet weather is expected to move into the area over the weekend, forcing some areas to cancel or change their holiday events.
Four vehicles were involved in a crash on Route 17 in Gloucester Friday morning.
Hampton Police want to prevent crime and have remixed a holiday classic to deter thieves from being Grinches.
