CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A driver who fell asleep caused a vehicle to crash over a guard rail on Interstate 664 in Chesapeake Monday night.
Virginia State Police dispatchers said a call came in at 8 p.m. for a single-vehicle crash with injuries. Sgt. Pew with VSP said a 1996 Dodge pickup truck went off the road and over the guard rail on I-664 northbound at Pughsville Road.
A Virginia State Trooper told WAVY.com the 19-year-old male driver fell asleep at the wheel when the truck fell approximately 70 feet onto a railroad. Police determined speed -- not alcohol -- was also a factor in the crash.
The driver was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with a broken shoulder.
Pew said the driver was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control of a vehicle.
