CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A man was shot during an early morning robbery in the South Norfolk area, and police are looking for three suspects.
Kelly O'Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said three men forced their way into a home in the 1000 block of Collingwood Ave. Friday morning. O'Sullivan told WAVY's Lauren Compton the men came in through the back door while a grandmother and her four-year-old granddaughter were upstairs sleeping.
The men rummaged through the house and were apparently in the house for some time looking for something, according to O'Sullivan. They were interrupted when a man came home. When he did not meet the suspects' demands, he was shot.
Neighbors say they were shocked to hear what happened in their community.
"I was just taken aback from it," said neighboring resident Joseph Roberson. "I was stunned about everything. That sort of thing just don't happen in this neighborhood."
The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The woman and child were not hurt.
Police have not said what they believe the suspects were looking for.
O'Sullivan said the suspects are three men between the 25 and 35 years old, and they were wearing masks and dark clothing.
"It is an eye opener," said Roberson. "I mean it's like, Wow this is happening right across the street from me? My neighbors, you couldn't ask for better neighbors."
