CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A Hampton Roads Transit bus caught fire Thursday morning along South Military Highway.
Kelly O'Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department told WAVY.com the call came in around 11 a.m. in the 1400 block of South Military Highway. The bus was evacuated and no one was hurt.
Capt. Scott Saunders with the Chespeake Fire Department said the cause appears to be a mechanical failure. When fire crews arrived on scene, they found smoke and flames coming from a rear-wheel well on the bus.
The fire was under control by 11:30 a.m.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said work to secure the Bonner Bridge could take anywhere from a week to 90 days.
