CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Tanisha Watts said her ex-fiance, Charles Collins, was jealous of her new relationship with Michael Temple when he broke into her home Sunday morning in the 1300 block of Canal Drive in Chesapeake.
"Michael left the bedroom to go into the restroom, going down the hall to the restroom and I heard a noise and it was pop, pop, pop, pop," said Watts.
Police said Collins shot Temple, who died a short time later. Tanisha said she quickly realized Collins was in her apartment. She said he barricaded the door with her couch.
Her 19-year-old son, DJ, tried to help her escape.
"My baby died because he was trying to stop Charles from shooting me as I was going out the door. He tackled Charles, and I could just see out the corner of my eye they were tousling and then I heard the shot," Watts explained.
Collins's mother, Linda, was shocked when Watts called to tell her the news.
"I said, 'What do you mean he killed your son and shot your son?' She said, 'Charlie shot my son.' I said, ' Well, Tanisha what happened?' She said, 'Charlie just pointed the gun at him and shot him in the chest.' I said, 'I don't believe that'."
But, police said it's true. DJ died at the hospital from his gunshot wound. Collins now faces murder charges, which are the most serious charges in his lengthy and at times violent criminal history detailed in North Carolina court documents.
WAVY.com uncovered that since 1997, Collins's convictions include assaulting a woman on two separate occasions. He served jail time for multiple larceny counts, breaking & entering, and drug charges.
Most recently, Chesapeake court documents show police arrested Collins for attacking someone in January.
"Charles was arrested from that same house, and he was charged with attempted malicious wounding on my son. He went to jail," Watts said.
Collins's preliminary hearing was continued twice. At the last hearing, Watts and DJ could not attend, so Watts said the judge released Collins. That was just two-and-a-half weeks ago.
In addition to the two counts of murder, Collins is facing multiple counts of abduction and firearms charges. Meanwhile, police shot Collins at the scene, and they said he is in the hospital in critical condition.
