CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The man who drove off Interstate 664 Monday survived to tell his story about what happened.
19-year-old Nick Cavey drove over a guardrail and plummeted down a ravine 70 feet below.
"I'm really glad to still be here," Cavey told WAVY.com. "I'm really glad that it wasn't worse than it was."
Those are two sentences Cavey can't say enough. His accident happened Monday night near the Pughsville Road exit.
"I remember traffic wasn't bad at all or anything like that," Cavey added. "I was going down. I had passed Portsmouth Boulevard, and I guess I must have nodded off."
Cavey says when he opened his eyes the car in front was braking. Instead of slamming into the rear end, he swerved to avoid it and slammed into the guardrail.
"When I hit it, I hit it with the corner of my driver's side," he said. "I flipped over, and I just kept rolling down."
What happened next for the young father was a blur. He was in and out of consciousness.
"I just really remember being cold and in a lot of pain," Cavey added. "I was bleeding. I was scared."
He was pinned in his truck. Crews were forced to use the jaws of life to cut him out.
"The roof had caved in and it was practically touching the top of my head," Cavey said. "The door was jammed shut and my seatbelt was stuck. The steering wheel collapsed on my legs. When [crews] came to get me out, if felt like I was there forever."
Once he was freed, Cavey was rushed to the hospital. Amazingly, he only suffered a broken collarbone.
"I definitely feel like it was a pure miracle that I survived," Cavey added. "It didn't hit me until I actually saw all the pictures of my truck."
Cavey is now looking towards the future, feeling as if he's got a second chance at life. He has already enlisted and plans to join the Army when he is healed.
State troopers did, however, charge Cavey with reckless driving and failure to maintain control of the vehicle.
