ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A robber's plans were foiled when a clerk wrenched a shotgun out of his hands in Isle of Wight County Tuesday night.
The attempted robbery occurred at the Rushmere Food Mart located at 4761 Old Stage Hwy in the Smithfield area of the county around 8:30 p.m., according to information from Isle of Wight County spokeswoman Kristin Wilda.
An unknown suspect entered the store with the shotgun raised, pointed it at one clerk before pointing it at another behind the register. Moments later, the shotgun was grabbed by the first clerk who was able to gain control of the weapon after a short struggle.
The clerk, Keisha, spoke exclusively with WAVY.com about the incident.
"All I could see was the gun pointing at me and he turned his head. I grabbed the gun. We tussled. I took the gun from him and he ran," she said. "I did what I had to do to get out of that situation. It's somebody from around here. All these young boys need to stop robbing people and breaking into houses. They need to stop all that."
The suspect ran off and the entire incident was caught on surveillance video.
He's been described as a black male with a medium build who was wearing a black hoodie, face mask and gloves at the time of the incident.
