CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A suspect jumped off a bridge to escape troopers after a chase on Interstate 64, according to officials.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said a trooper was running radar on Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake when a Ford SUV sped by. When the trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused and a chase ensued.
The chase continued on Interstate 64 into the HOV system. Anaya said the suspect exited the HOV system at Granby Street in Norfolk and hit two marked VSP vehicles.
The suspect then jumped out of the moving vehicle and jumped over the Mason Creek bridge, landing in the creek. He continued on foot across Granby Street where he was apprehended by troopers, Anaya added.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Khalif Baucom of Virginia Beach, was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.
Baucom was charged with reckless driving, driving while suspended, felony elude, two counts of felony hit and run and two counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer.
Norfolk Fire & Rescue officials said a train went off its track Dec. 5, 2013 in the area of East Princess Anne and Ingleside roads.
HazMat crews have identified the material on a derailed train in Norfolk as cement. East Princess Anne and Ingleside roads have reopened to traffic.
A portion of Dominion Boulevard in Chesapeake is shut down until Friday morning as part of an emergency closure.
