VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A babysitter is facing a child abuse and neglect charge after a 2-year-old in her care died from blunt force trauma, according to police.
Tuesday, Brenda Garner withdrew her request for a bond hearing, stating she wanted to remain in custody. She can change her mind at any time.
Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department said officers responded to the 4900 block of Pimlico Circle on Nov. 14 for a report of an unconscious child around 1 p.m. The victim, 2-year-old Garrett King, was transported to a local hospital.
Medical personnel alerted police of possible child abuse in connection to King's case. King passed away the next day and his death was determined to be due to blunt force trauma.
According to police, King was left in the care of Garner, 34, around 8 a.m. by his mother. As a result of the investigation, police arrested Garner and charged her with felony child abuse and neglect.
Smith & Williams Funeral Home in Kempsville said King's family will accept visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. A celebration of his life will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in his name.
