PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Police have arrested a Suffolk man after several witnesses claimed they saw him pulling on car doors in a parking lot Saturday.
Jan Westerbeck, spokeswoman for the Portsmouth Police Department, said police received several complaints about a suspicious man in a parking lot along Cpl. J.M. Williams Avenue around 1 p.m. Once officers arrived on scene, they found Albert Leeamzie Riddick, 52. Investigators said he removed an iPhone from one of the vehicles.
According to Westerbeck, Riddick drove to the scene in a red Chevrolet Impala, which was not registered to him.
Additionally, witnesses in recent weeks have reported seeing the same vehicle and suspect in other parking lots throughout Portsmouth, tugging on the door handles of vehicles.
Riddick was arrested and charged with grand larceny and vehicle trespass. The vehicle he was driving is now in police custody, Westerbeck said.
