VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man is wanted for impersonating an officer and pulling over a woman for speeding last Friday.
According to Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department, a woman was driving along the 200 block of Independence Boulevard toward Baxter Road at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The victim told police a man driving a white pick-up truck pulled in front of her, slammed on his brakes and approached her. He then displayed a gold badge and asked for the woman's driver's license and registration.
The "officer" questioned the suspect and told her she was driving too fast. The woman then told him she knew a lot of police officers, at which point the suspect went back to his car and drove away.
The victim obtained the man's license plate. Police say the case is still under investigation and an arrest has not been made.
WAVY.com spoke with Sgt. Adam Bernstein with Virginia Beach Police asked him how drivers should handle that situation.
He says it's important to get the officer's badge number and if you still not sure, call 911.
"If you don't think it's a Virginia Beach Police officer, we welcome you to call 911 and stay on the phone with dispatcher," Bernstein said.
He also said to let the dispatcher know your location.
There have also been cases in the past of suspects using police lights to pull victims over.
That wasn't the case Friday but Bernstein has a few tips if you think the car behind you isn't police.
"The biggest thing is we want you to know we are behind you," Bernstein added. "So you can do that by turning on a dome light or turning on your hazards. Make sure you reduce you speed down to a slow crawl. Then head to a well light area with a lot of people around."
