NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Norfolk woman faced a judge Wednesday and was arraigned on a charge of performing an illegal abortion.
According to court documents obtained by WAVY.com, 20-year-old Jessica Carpenter was admitted to Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center located on Kingsley Lane in Norfolk on April 11 in labor. There, she gave birth to a boy said to be at 25 weeks gestation.
The baby died only 20 minutes after he was born.
Court documents indicate Child Protective Services was contacted by an anonymous caller who said Carpenter and her friend, 27-year-old Rachael Lowe, conspired to terminate Carpenter's pregnancy. Lowe was an employee of Tidewater Women's Health Clinic, which performs abortions.
Three friends of the pair told police Carpenter and Lowe said they intended to terminate the pregnancy and had purchased items from GNC in order to do so. They also told police Carpenter and Lowe planned to break into Tidewater Women's Health Clinic to obtain items to induce labor.
Carpenter and Lowe were later arrested and charged with one count of illegal cause of abortion and conspiracy to illegally cause an abortion. Both bonded out of jail, according to Paula Miller with the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
A knock at a door to the apartment where Carpenter and Lowe both lived went unanswered.
Carpenter is due back in court in August.
