ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) - The Elizabeth City Police Department responded to a call for a fight between a father and son Saturday night.
Officers arrived to find the son, 29-year-old Demetre Whidbee, in the yard of 203 Roanoke Avenue, with severe cuts to his right arm and under his chin just above his throat.
Whidbee's father, Demetre Gibbs, was also outside; his clothes were torn and his shirt bloodied, according to Captain John D. Young.
Witnesses and the victim reported to police that Demetre Gibbs was yelling at Demetre Whidbee, then attacked Whidbee with a knife.
Whidbee was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with what are described as serious but treatable injuries.
Gibbs was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and inflicting serious injuries. His bond was set at $75,000.
Charges have been made in a domestic abuse investigation involving a 74-year-old woman in Elizabeth City.
