WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) - A York County elementary school principal was arrested after a hit and run in the Williamsburg area on Nov. 18.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said troopers were called to the corner of Penniman Road and Vineyard Lane in Williamsburg around 12:45 a.m. for a report of a hit and run. According to witnesses, a white SUV struck a utility pole and fled the scene.
Troopers were able to locate the vehicle and the driver, identified as 38-year-old Okrika Kamari Harold, 38, in the 100 block of Valor Court in Williamsburg. Harold was arrested and is facing charges of DUI and hit and run with property damage.
WAVY.com has learned Harold is the principal at Magruder Elementary School in York County. On Nov. 21, a letter was sent to parents stating Harold has been assigned to duties at the school board office until further notice.
Assistant principal Jane Yatzeck has been named acting principal at this time.
"While this change in administrative duties is unexpected, I want to assure you that school - and division - level staff are committed to maintaining the high standards of educational excellence for which our schools are known," the letter from Catherine Jones, Director of School Administration, said.
"It is not right. It was a shame she was out there drinking and driving," said one grandmother of a student.
