ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) - Isle of Wight Sheriff Mark Marshall says a second body has been found in the woods behind the home where 58-year-old Sandra Joyner was found dead Friday morning.
The Isle of Wight's Sheriff's Office identified the body on April 30 as 62-year-old Joseph Joyner, Sandra's husband.
"Everybody knows the Joyners," said neighbor Carlene Bowers.
But, no one knows what happened to them. Deputies believe Sandra Joyner was beaten to death.
Isle of Wight authorities say an arrest has been made in the case, but are not releasing any further details.
"I know it's a bad feeling for the whole community," neighbor Michael Lawrence added.
Richard Amos told WAVY.com he stopped by the Joyner home Friday morning. He was going to meet Sandy's husband, Joe Joyner.
"I went there about 11," Amos said. "I didn't notice anything strange."
He told WAVY.com Sandy's co-workers arrived looking for her after the longtime nurse didn't she didn't show up for work at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
"It's real sad," Amos added. "Real sad about her...blunt trauma to the head or something. Somebody had to do it."
With Sandy dead inside the home, deputies started looking for Joe. Search dogs combed the area.
"This doesn't happen in the country," Bowers said. "You don't hear helicopters flying around trying to find people."
The Virginia State Police chopper later found something gruesome in the woods. Another body, but authorities aren't yet if it's Joe.
"Joe hadn't been seen, so I wonder where he at," Amos said.
"It's just wondering what happened?" Bowers asked. "What really happened? That's one of the things that you really want to know - what really happened?"
It's a question everyone in the small community is now asking. A community that neighbors said won't be the same.
"We don't know all the ins and outs," Lawrence. "God knows. That's one thing about it. God knows."
The couple was last seen by family members Thursday night at their home.
A press conference is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on April 30 where more information will be provided in what the IOW Sheriff's Office is calling a double homicide.
