SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Holidays like Independence Day are big days to display flags. But many are unsure of the proper procedures when flying flags.
It is a custom to only fly flags from sunrise to sunset, but when a patriotic effect is desired a flag could be displayed for twenty-four hours. This is only possible if the flag is properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
If a flag is displayed horizontally or at an angle the union of the flag, blue section with white stars, should be placed at the peak of the staff. The only exception is if the flag is at half-staff.
When a flag is over a street, it should be vertical. On an east and west street, the union should be facing north. On a north and south street, the union should be facing east.
A flag should never be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of any vehicles. This includes trains, boats, or cars. To display a flag on a motorcycle the staff must be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.
Once a flag reaches a condition in which it is no longer fitting emblem for display it must be destroyed in a dignified way, such as burning.
