NEW YORK (KXAN/LIVELEAK) - It was a brave neighbor to the rescue when a fire broke out on the fifth floor of a New York apartment building, leaving a man to straddle the ledge from the outside for safety.
A worker was doing construction in the empty apartment when a fire broke out, according to LiveLeak's website.
Thick clouds of black smoke billow from the window, and you can see neighbors on the fire escape nearby waving a ladder to help the man. Neighbors become worried because the ladder isn't secure, and they even pull it back.
That's when a neighbor comes swinging down from a fire escape above and walks bravely across the ladder -- albeit unstable -- after it's offered up again. He grabs man still clinging to his ledge and guides him toward it.
Onlookers cheer when the rescue is complete, but it wasn't over just yet because both men had to navigate back across the unsteady ladder.
