NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - With the threat of this season's first tropical storm, Harborfest organizers are putting their focus on weather.
Some 200,000 people are expected to attend over the weekend, and events are being shifted. WAVY.com caught up with Festevents CEO Karen Scherberger and talked to her about the last minute scramble to make changes.
"There's really no reason for people not to come down," Scherberger said. "It's going to be a great event. Unfortunately the weather on the water isn't going to be terrific, but everything will be back up and ready to go Saturday and Sunday just like planned."
She said they've been down this road before.
"In 2007, two days before Sail Virginia and a Nor'easter came through here an leveled everything. In 2000, a Microburst caused one of the barges to break loose," recalled Scherberger.
Festevents announced Thursday afternoon the Parade of Sail scheduled for Friday at noon has been canceled. All ships that were scheduled to be open to the public on Saturday will open at noon.
"For the sake of a couple of hours and a nice Parade of Sail which we all will miss, it wasn't worth putting anyone in harms way," said Scherberger.
Many Harborfest activities scheduled for Friday at Town Point Park have been canceled, according to Festevents. The canceled attractions include All American Cornhole Blast, OBX Jet Pak, Craft Beer Tasting, Omar's Fountain Café, Harborfest Floating Party Dock, Harborfest Town Point Market, Waterfall Swing, Radio Harborfest, Harborfest TV, Global Inheritance Energy Playground, TRASHed Recycling Store, Virginia's Finest Pavilion, Merbellas-See Under the Sea, Penny Farther and Hammock Hangout.
The activities on Saturday and Sunday remain scheduled as planned.
HarborFEAST was relocated to Nauticus for Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. All HarborFEAST activities were under the Pavilion behind Nauticus.
Harborfest activities scheduled for Friday, June 7, are being moved to Scope (201 E. Brambleton Avenue, Norfolk) and Waterside Festival marketplace (333 Waterside Drive, Norfolk). Many of the children's activities are moving to Waterside Festival marketplace.
The main musical acts on Friday, such as O.A.R. and Dirty Guv'nahs, are relocating to Scope.
Starting Friday at 4 p.m., free buses will shuttle visitors between both locations, and will run until 11:30 p.m.
Sail By festival sailing excursions are canceled for Friday, but purchases will be honored on Saturday or Sunday.
As of now, Harborfest activities for the rest of the weekend, including the fireworks, will go on as planned.
