US Olympic star Lindsey Vonn's whopping IRS bill

Vonn pays off $1.7M in back taxes

DENVER (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn announced through her Facebook page that she has paid the more than $1.7 million she owed in back taxes.

According to public records obtained through the Elko County recorder's office in Nevada, the IRS hit the reigning overall World Cup champion and her estranged husband with a tax lien earlier this month. The Detroit News first reported on the tax lien.

Vonn wrote on Facebook that she's "disappointed with this situation" and has done "everything in my power to settle it immediately."

Her spokesman, Lewis Kay, confirmed Monday she has settled the tax issue.

A message seeking comment was left by The Associated Press with an IRS official.

"The money owed was for the 2010 tax year, which was filed on time, and it has been paid in full," Vonn posted on her Facebook page. "This is an important lesson for me. Not being in control of my finances and relying on someone else who you believed had your best interest at heart was a mistake and one I will not make twice."

In November, Vonn separated from Thomas Vonn, her husband of four years and her personal coach.

Lindsey Vonn recaptured the overall title this season by amassing 1,980 points, the most ever by a female skier. She also won the downhill, super-G and combined titles.

Vonn has 53 World Cup wins in her career, trailing only Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell (62) and Switzerland's Vreni Schneider (55).
