WASHINGTON (CNN/NATIONAL ARCHIVES) - Gerald Ford, the 38th president of the United States, took the oath of office on August 9th, 1974.
He assumed the presidency after President Richard Nixon resigned in light of the Watergate scandal.
Some of the nation's challenges during Ford's presidency are like those today, including a recession and an ailing economy.
Prior to becoming president, the former vice president served 25 years in Congress, including eight years as House Minority Leader.
Before leaving the White House, he granted his predecessor a
full pardon.
