WASHINGTON (CNN) - George Walker Bush was sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States on January 20, 2001. He was born July 6th, 1946.

After graduating from Yale University, Bush became involved in the family's oil business. He later co-owned the Texas Rangers baseball team. In 1994, he became governor of Texas.

In 2000, he was elected president, winning the electoral votes, but trailing in the popular vote. Eight months into his term, the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack occurred. Bush rallied the country and announced a global war on terror. That year, he ordered an invasion of Afghanistan. Two years later, he toppled Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.

President Bush was sworn in for a second-term on January 20, 2005. An economic and mortgage crisis during his second term caused a major drop in his popularity.
