The nation has gotten its first look at the 22-year-old man accused of trying to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Jared Loughner appeared in a packed federal courtroom in Phoenix on Monday for a hearing with his head shaved, a cut above the right temple and his hands cuffed.

He was represented by attorney Judy Clarke, who also defended "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski.

The judge asked Loughner if he understood that he could get life in prison -- or the death penalty -- for killing federal Judge John Roll, one of the six who died in the shooting rampage at Giffords' meeting with constituents on Saturday in Tucson.

Loughner answered "Yes" and the judge ordered him held without bail.

The hearing was moved to Phoenix from Tucson because the entire federal bench there recused itself because Roll was the chief judge.
