YUXIAN, China (NBC/CCTV VIA RTV) - Sparks flew during a traditional performance in northern China Saturday.

A folk artist threw molten iron against a cold wall, creating what looked like fireworks.

Chinese Central TV says the city has celebrated the Lunar New Year with the performance for more than 500 years.

An artist threw hot iron on the cold brick of the city's cold, brick gate -- causing sparks to burst into the night sky.

People in China and most Asian countries are celebrating the first day of the Lunar New Year Sunday.

The year of the black water snake lasts until Jan. 31, 2014.
