Celebrating 45 years of 'Star Trek'

INDIANAPOLIS - I love Star Trek for many reasons. One of the things I love about it most is how it continues to cross so many dividing lines in social circles.

It is not just for the sci-fi elite, the uber-geek or con-goer specifically, but for everyone. It has touched the lives of at least four generations, and most people can say – even my dad – they’ve seen an episode or a movie.

Star Trek is as much a part of our pop culture history as rock-n-roll, Andy Warhol or Conan O’Brien.

True Star Trek fans, or “Trekkies,” are pretty dang serious when it comes to their love for the series. After watching this great documentary on them, aptly named “Trekkies,” I was more convinced of the impact that the show, et. al. has had on our culture.

Speaking as someone who considers herself quite on the fringe, I felt pretty mainstream after watching this documentary. But on the whole, it was a great peak into a world most Americans don’t know. It shows just how much Star Trek has impacted our lives, some more than others.

Think about the realm of sci-fi today. It’s hard to gauge whether or not it would be as intertwined into music/movies/television without Star Trek, but I’d dare say without it I doubt we’d have as much general interest in sci-fi, much less an entire cable TV station dedicated to all things science fiction and fantasy.

Check out a few history facts about how Star Trek has impacted our culture in the last 45 years in an aesome graphic.

Here's another clip from the doc, where in a guy makes some pretty sciencey things to the amazement of all.

If you can’t find the documentary, I suggest searching YouTube for more clips. (There are plenty) And whether or not you are a Kirk fan or a Picard fan, whether you are an old-school trekkie or TNG, there is a little bit of trekkie in us all. Live long and prosper. <3
