INDIANAPOLIS - Yet again, Twitter along with other social media outlets broke trending charts with the fall of an infamous world leader. Beginning in the early hours of the morning, tweets began pouring in with unverified reports of Moammar Gadhafi’s capture, leading up to his death later on in the day.
Twitter proves once again as a viable communication tool that breaks down barriers between nations worldwide.
Videos of Gadhafi after capture and then of his body later on went viral early, graphic images showing revolutionary forces celebrating and even one of his captors waving his golden handgun.
Celebrities even jumped on the social media bandwagon. With tweets from Bob Saget to Albert Brooks, no joke was left untweeted.
Piers Morgan defined the demised dictator most succinctly saying, “"#Gadhafi has ruled #Libya since I was 4 years old," he wrote on his Twitter account. "He's the Queen Victoria of despots."
And trending most recently, zombie Gadhafi Halloween costume ideas. Sorry to break it you everyone, but about 145,897 people have dibs on that already, according to a Twitter search (I lost count).
My suggestion is to take a look through the years as his wardrobe. He by far outdid any other dictatorship’s wardrobe, you should have plenty to work with.
But in all serious, what’s to be noted here is how our social networks are integral in spreading news a world away it seems and how everyone should be aware of responsible social media use.
What an incredible tool during such an important time for not only those countries involved in battling injustice in the world, but for all of us everywhere. Tweet and/or post responsibly.
