HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Strong winds caused damage across Hampton Roads as a severe storm system moved through during the overnight hours Thursday.
Several areas reported trees down, some of which landed on homes. Battalion Chief J. Douglas Carper, II with the Newport News Fire Department told WAVY.com a tree fell on a home in the 200 block of Daphia Circle, injuring one person. Their condition is unknown at this time, but they were transported to a local hospital.
Carper said a tree fell on an apartment building in the 5000 block of Arlington Avenue, condemning three apartments and displacing three families.
Two other homes were also condemned in Newport News, according to Carper.
A tree fell across Indian Trail in Suffolk about half a mile from Ruritan Boulevard. Fire crews were dispatched to cut the tree up and Suffolk city workers moved the tree off to the side of the roadway around 4:30 a.m.
Farmer Frank's Farm Market located at 6148 Holland Rd. (Route 58) in Suffolk suffered some damage to its sign.
In Virginia Beach, the storm system damaged Atlantic Glass and Mirror located at 1720 Virginia Beach Blvd.
The storm also caused power outages across the area. Bonita Harris with Dominion Virginia Power told WAVY.com 55,000 customers lost power during the event.

Several schools were also without power and are listed below. Harris said power was restored to most of the schools by 9 a.m.
