State of emergency declared in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is declaring a state of emergency in preparation for Hurricane Sandy.

While there's some uncertainty of the storm's final track, the governor's office says all forecasts call for significant impacts to Virginia over the weekend and early next week.

McDonnell says the declaration is a precautionary measure to ensure that Virginia is ready for any potential impacts from the storm.

The hurricane is following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm to hit the U.S. East Coast with a super-storm next week.

McDonnell says the projected long duration of the storm has the potential to produce significant flooding, extensive power outages, as well as snowfall in part of Virginia.
