Shelters open in wake of Sandy

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Shelters have been opened in the following locations for those in need during Hurricane Sandy.

Chesapeake

  • The resident shelter at Oscar Smith High School, the Medical Needs Shelter at Greenbrier Middle School, and the Pet Shelter at the River Crest Community Center closed at 5 p.m. Monday. Residents who have questions or concerns can call the Emergency Call Center at 382-2489.

Currituck

  • Currituck County will open a temporary storm shelter today at the Department of Social Services (DSS). The shelter will begin accepting residents at 7 p.m. Monday.Any county resident wishing to stay overnight in the shelter due to flooding at their property, or other storm-related conditions, may report to the DSS office at 2793 Caratoke Highway. Shelter officials may be reached at (252) 619-4429.

Newport News

  • The shelter at Warwick High School closed Monday afternoon.

Portsmouth

  • Lakeview Elementary School, 1300 Home Avenue

Virginia Beach

  • Birdneck Elementary School, 957 S. Birdneck Road
  • Animal Care and Adoption Center will house pets for those using the Birdneck shelter, 341 S. Birdneck Road.

York County/Poquoson joint shelter

  • Grafton School Complex, 403 Grafton Drive in Yorktown, closed at 10 a.m. Monday.
